It’s also exactly what it costs to give a grieving family something they will hold for the rest of their lives.
At Kyle’s Kritters, we try to be honest with our community about where every dollar goes. Not because we have to be, but because you deserve to know. And when you understand the math, $50 stops being a number and becomes a moment.
Here’s the breakdown.
Each bear costs approximately $50. That covers the animal itself and the re-recordable sound module inside — the piece that captures a heartbeat, a voice, a message. Your gift helps cover program costs, including delivery to partner hospitals, packaging, and operations.
That’s it. That’s the whole equation.
$50 = 1 bear = 1 family comforted.
Now let’s talk about what that $50 actually does in a room.
Somewhere in a CSRA hospital, a family is sitting at a bedside. Maybe they’ve been there for days. Maybe this is sudden. Either way, they know, or they’re starting to know, that this is goodbye.
A nurse walks in. She’s seen this before. A hundred times, maybe more. She knows that there is nothing she can say to make this easier. But she has something to offer.
She places a soft animal in the family’s hands. Inside it, a small device is ready, waiting to record 30 seconds of a heartbeat.
The family records it. Maybe they press the bear to their loved one’s chest. Maybe they record a message. Maybe they don’t know what to do yet, but they hold the bear anyway, and that feels like enough.
They take it home. Their child sleeps with it that first night. And the second. And the third.
Months later, when the silence gets heavy, someone presses the bear. And for 30 seconds, the room is full again.

Kyle’s Kritters has delivered more than 3,000 heartbeat bears to families at Piedmont Augusta and the Medical College of Georgia. Every single one was free. Every single one was possible because someone in this community decided that $50 was worth spending on a stranger’s grief.
Founder Mendy Nichole Tootle started this mission with personal funds and support from friends and family. She didn’t wait for a grant. She didn’t wait for a nonprofit status. She just knew that families were leaving the hospital without something they needed, and she went and got it for them.
That mission still runs on the same fuel it always has: people who care.
